Learn To Duck: A “B Minus” Kinda Guy

  • Kath · 1 year ago
You can do it Micah. You've probably known that since you first heard the phrase 'B Minus kinda guy'...that you DID have it in you to be the A+ guy.

So bring it. And keep blogging as you bring it.

My brother worked for an MLB team last summer as a staff writer. He's a huge baseball fan and knows more about the game than any mere mortal should.

A couple of months ago, we were talking about a decent player (by MLB standards) who was a recent (and expensive) addition to the team. I said he was a waste of money. My brother quickly retorted: (I'm paraphrasing here, as he tends to rant when I make gross, declarative statements.) "His defense saves more runs per game than his counterpart's big bat makes. On paper, he's alright; but, since he came on board, they've won more games. And more interestingly, the other players averages have improved by about .050 across the board. You don't know what you're talking about-- there's more to this game than just numbers."

I hate it when he's right.

I've been staring at this comment box for the past 45 minutes, trying to think exactly how to say this. So, I hope this makes sense: I've seen people "live up to their potential" only to sacrifice the things that make them who they are and great to me because they played by other people's draconian definitions of worth.

Your "B- work" encourages me to be more honest with myself. Which, in turn, helps me become a better leader and a better person... probably more than you realize. And, I'll bet I'm not alone.

You've made yourself accountable to all of your friends and colleagues. That takes balls. You may have done B-minus work; but, with declarations like this, you're most certainly not a B-minus guy.

And you've reached self-actualization by realizing this and working to improve it :) Which is the top of Maslow's Triangle, which many "A+" people can only dream to reach.
